Thailand climate

Thailand enjoys a tropical climatethat is typically high in both humidity and temperature with an important feature being the monsoons. Anyone who is traveling to this land needs to know about the climate so as to make their journey more comfortable.

The months of April and May are the hottest and even the locals complain about the searing heat of summer. The South west monsoons arrive in June bringing some relief to the parched earth. This season continues till the end of October with intermittent bursts of rain.

The months from November till the end of February is a little more pleasant than the rest of the seasons with a decrease in the levels of humidity and cool breezes blowing from the North East. This is the best time to visit Thailand as the weather is just fine and absolutely suitable for touring.

Thailand climate can be divided into three main seasons. The climatic conditions that are prevalent in the north are favored greatly by the Thais as it is comfortably cool. With the temperatures remaining 3to 5 degrees lower than the rest of Thailand.

Winter- The temperatures in the mountainous regions are lower than the Chiang Mai city and tourists should bring adequate clothing to brace against the cold. The temperatures at night can drop to as low as 2 degrees in the cold season.

Monsoons-There is hardly any rainfall in the months between May to September. Continuous rainfall is rare and the north differs to a great extent from the central and the southern parts of Thailand. A large part of the country during the monsoons suffers from flash floods especially in the central, north and the north eastern regions. The monsoons are the best season for river activities like rafting. The monsoon season is brief but the downpours are heavy.

Summer- the country is the hottest between the months of March and May and the heat is really scorching. Temperatures range from 32 degrees to 35 degrees. Bangkok is especially hot with temperatures rising to as high as 35 degrees.

If you are traveling from the west you will surely not find a cold season. Thailand climate may just be a little cooler than hot or just drier than the weather being absolutely humid. For such weather conditions cottons are the best option. You can also buy these locally at cheap prices. The tropical sun is fierce and so a wide brimmed hat and a good sunscreen lotion would be of great help.

History of Thailand
Thailand was originally known as Siam and it has been populated from the times immemorial. The origins date back to about 4,500 years and they seem to have originated in north western Szechuan and later moved downwards from China to Thailand. Here they split into two major portions. One group settled in the north in the kingdom of “Lan Na” and the other moved south and became the kingdom of “Sukhotai”

There are innumerable disputes over the origin of the Thais. Some say that they were originally Austronesians instead of Mongoloids but whatever the case might be by the end of the 13th Century the Thais were well settled in the South East of Asia.

The Khmer influence

The western and the central area of Thailand was occupied by the Mon civilization from the 9th to the 11th century. This gradually spread to the central area and it influenced art, religion and language. It was during the period of Khmer that Sanskrit entered the Mon-Thai vocabulary. There were stone temples built at Phantom Rung and Phimai according to the Khmer but it did not spread to the entire region.

The Lanna period

The kingdom of Lan Ha flourished over a span of 200 years. In the middle of the 15th Century its arts and literature reached the pinnacle and this was during the King Tilokoraj period. After he died Lan Na weakened due to internal conflicts caused by the successors of the Sukhothai.

Sukhothai

This was the first Thai Kingdom and it was founded by Khun Pha Muang and Khun Bang Klang Thao (Si Inthrathit) in 1238. This period is considered to be the Golden Age in Thai culture as it was during this time that the territories spread and the modern Thai alphabet was developed.
Ayutthaya Period

This was the capital of the Thai kingdom that was founded in 1350 by U-Thong King. It is an island formed by the three rivers the Pasak, the Chao Phraya and the Loburi. It was an ideal place for settlement due to its economical and geographical advantages. A Portuguese Embassy was established in the area followed by the Spaniards.

The Modern times

After the Ayutthaya period came the Ratanakosin period and it was under the rule of Rama IX that the name of the country was changed to Thailand which means “free”. Throughout the centuries the land has witnessed a lot of bloodshed especially during the World War II to emerge into its present condition.

Thailand Overview
Called the kingdom of Siam till 1939, the warm, tropical land of Thailand, located in the Gulf of Siam, is the only country in Southeast Asia never to have been colonized. This tiny country with the bustling Bangkok as its capital is known for its free, open economy. The tourists can check out this Thailand guide which gives them an overview of Thailand to know why Thailand is a hit with tourists, across the world!

Culture of Thailand

The historical and religious heritage of the Thai people is profound to say the least. The official language is standard Thai and most people are conversant with English as well. The major cultural influence is that of Buddhism, with Hinduism playing a minor part. Cultural influence of Thailand’s neighbors Laos, Vietnam and China is pretty evident as well.

Popular Thailand Destinations

A few of the must-sees on a Thailand trip would include beach islands like Phuket and Ko Samui in the south, the old capital of Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai and Sukhotai in the north, popular beach resort city like Pattaya and island destinations like Ko Samet, besides the beautiful capital city, Bangkok.

Sightseeing in Thailand
